No carb and low carb diets like the Atkins diet and South Beach diet have become quite popular in recent years. Many people have reported fast weight losses on these diets. However, before you jump on board you need to ask yourself: is a no carbs diet right for you? The theory behind a no carbs diet or low carbs diet is the belief that sugar from carbohydrates causes weight gain. Carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels and that triggers insulin production that prevents stored fat from being burned. The idea behind the no carbs and low carbs diets is to limit carb intake to stimulate your body to burn fat rather than store it. A no carbs diet focuses on eating plenty of protein and fat instead of carbs to help burn fat faster. These no carbs diet and low carb diet theories have given carbohydrates a bad name. However, it is important to keep in mind when considering a no carbs diet that carbohydrates play a vital role in your body’s overall health. Carbohydrates are your main source of energy and provide your body with many of the essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals that it needs to keep you healthy. Limiting your carb intake can not only deprive you of your primary energy source and essential minerals, vitamins and nutrients, but can also lead to your body producing ketonics. Ketonics can cause dehydration, headaches, and nausea, as well as many other unhealthy side effects. Over the long term this may lead to muscle break down, kidney disease and an increase risk for heart attacks. While it is very true that a no carbs diet can pose potentially harmful side effects and health risks, it is important to distinguish between good carbs and bad carbs. Good carbs provide you with energy and many essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Bad carbs can lead to obesity by storing fat rather than burning it, and also result in diabetes, cancer, heart attacks, and other harmful diseases. Good carbs include leafy green vegetables, many fruits, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. Bad carbs are carbs that have been stripped of much of their nutrients and fiber. White breads and rice, baked goods, sodas and many snack foods are the types of carbs you need to avoid if you want to stay healthy and burn fat instead of storing it.Over the long run, a no carbs diet can pose significant health risks. A wiser strategy would be to cut out junk food and other processed, refined foods and incorporate healthy, complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables and fruits into your diet. This way you will be getting the essential carbohydrates your body needs to stay healthy.
